Excitement builds for our free Festival of Table Tennis

We’re busy finalising arrangements for the Dumfries Festival of Table Tennis at the club this weekend 22-23 April, as we join countries around the world to celebrate #WorldTableTennisDay.
Following the Club Championships on Saturday and Sunday morning, we’ve got table tennis for all ages and abilities from 2.30 – 5 pm on Sunday afternoon, including:
  • Pick up a bat and have a go – everyone’s welcome, from complete beginners to regular players. Equipment provided, and a playing partner if you’re on your own
  • Take our 5-bat challenge: can you return a shot as the bats get smaller and smaller?
  • Discover how to play Noughts and Crosses on a table tennis table
  • Have a go against our table tennis robot
  • Play a game with our old-style sandpaper bats
  • Chat to our club volunteers about playing table tennis at our coaching, junior, over-50s and open sessions

Watch top-quality table tennis Between 3.30 – 4 pm, our very own Scotland No. 4 (and No. 2 Under-21) table tennis star Danny Bajwa is doing an exhibition with our other top Scotland-ranked players, so there’ll be plenty of amazing table tennis to admire.

We have other table-tennis-related activities on offer for those who aren’t playing, focused on this year’s World Table Tennis Day theme of Sustainability:

  • Design a bat – we’ll provide a template and colours, you provide a design, with a prize for the best one
  • Suggest a good use for cracked and broken table tennis balls. The club gets through a lot of them, so we’ve got a prize for the best suggestion(s)!
  • Find out how to recycle table tennis bats with new rubber. Bring your own old bat for advice, or you can buy one of our good quality recycled ones

We’ll also have free light refreshments available in our upstairs viewing gallery.

Don’t miss it!

Junior British League Success for Shannon

Shannon Brown competed in the Junior British League in Derby Arena over the 18th/19th February, despite ongoing injury issues. Alongside her team-mates in Drumchapel Glasgow’s Junior Girls team - Amelia Smolarek and Megan Mulhern - she took part in a second gruelling programme of five matches. The first batch of matches was played on October 8th and 9th, 2022, when the team won three of their Division 4 matches (all 5/1), drew one (3-3), and lost to the top team Lillington TTC 1-5.

Saturday 18th February The day began with a draw against Chelmsford, whom Drumchapel had beaten 5-1 in October. All three girls won one match and lost one. The next match, with Fusion, also ended in a draw, just as had happened in October. Shannon won one tie 3/0 and lost the other by the same score. Next up was Brighton TTC and the team pulled off another 5-1 victory. Shannon won both her ties and was awarded the Player of the Match accolade. She had been Player of the Match twice in October, the first time against Brighton TTC and the second time against Ellenborough Girls.

Sunday 19th February The Drumchapel girls faced Ellenborough Girls first thing on Sunday morning. This time they went one better, defeating them 6-0. Shannon won one tie 3/0 but had a bit of a struggle on her hands in the second, which she finally won 3/2.
The final match of the weekend was with Lillington TTC. Having lost the last encounter 1/5, the only win coming from Amelia, Drumchapel improved on that result when Megan also won a tie, to make the score 2-4.

The girls finished the weekend in second place, which hopefully will afford the team the chance of promotion to Division 3. Amelia and Shannon won 65% of their matches, with Megan scoring 60%. This was an excellent learning opportunity for all three as it widened their experience of playing new opponents. This is very important as Scotland currently has a small number of girls playing at national level.

League Report February

Top Bananas faced The Chuckle Brothers on the 11th February; when Maria De Silva opened with a 3/0 win against Barry Kirkpatrick, 13-11, 11-9, 11-3. Brother Reuben followed up with a 3/0 victory over Paul Dowson, and the siblings then won the doubles 3/0. Next Paul defeated Maria, 7, 8, -8, 3, for what turned out to be his side’s only point as Reuben beat Barry in the last tie.

The men were in action again four days later against Apple Crumble, who fielded Iain Macleod and Craig Wilson. Iain began well by beating Barry in a tense five-set match in which he won the last set 12-10. Thereafter The Chuckle Brothers amassed four points, though the going was pretty tough. They went 1-2 down in the doubles but clawed their way back to win it 3/2. Paul and Iain then played a see-saw tie, which Paul finally won 11-8 in the fifth set. Barry secured the fourth point with a 3/0 victory over Craig.

On the same night Gaulty Towers chalked up a 4/1 win over Netflicks. Paul Borrowdale won the opening match against Gordon Duff, 9, 9, -3, 10, and Graham Gault took a close tie from Shona Morton, 11, 7, -10, 6. After lagging behind 0-2, the men won the doubles -10, -8, 5, 3, 4, to lead 3/0. Any match between Graham and Gordon has the potential to go the distance, and so it proved this time as Gordon battled back from 0-2 down to beat Graham -10, -11, 6, 8, 7. In the last tie Paul was in top form and won the fourth point by beating Shona 3/0.

The last update of the League statistics was on the 31st January, at which point Top Bananas had completed the first half of their scheduled matches and topped the division with 31 points. Lying second were the then unbeaten Netflicks, with 25 points. The Chuckle Brothers and Apple Crumble were locked in a fifth-place tie, each with two wins from six matches and 11 points.

DTTC gets a Defibrillator

We're pleased to announce that the club now has a Defibrillator. Table tennis is a fantastic healthy activity, but this piece of kit can save a life in the rare event someone collapses and isn't breathing. Though defibrillators can be used without training, it's really useful to see how it works and to improve confidence we could use it if need be. The club has therefore arranged for a short DeFib training session in the club on March 27th at 19:00. We'd like to get a big group of club users trained up, so please attend if you can. There are sign-up sheets at the club, or email info@dumfriesttc.co.uk as we need to know numbers well in advance.

League Report January

In mid-January Netflicks inflicted a defeat on Top Bananas, represented by Reuben and Maria De Silva. Reuben lived up to expectation with two singles wins, though Gordon Duff won a set from him. Shona Morton and Gordon edged the first set of the doubles 11-9 and swung into a “well-oiled machine” mode to win the second and third sets easily. In her first tie Maria took a set from Gordon, then fought out a much closer four-set match with Shona, who narrowly won the final set 12-10.

Burns Night found Netflicks and KB Spinners locked in combat. Kay Solaja opened with a 3/1 victory over Shona, whilst Brian Kirkpatrick lost a gruelling five-set tie to Gordon. Shona and Gordon won the doubles, -5,6, 9, 10, to pull 2/1 up, and Gordon made it 3/1 with a 3/0 win against Kay. In the final tie Brian edged Shona out of all three sets, 9, 9, 11, for an extra point.

KB Spinners had had mixed fortunes in their previous matches. In early January they lost 2/3 to Gaulty Towers, when Graham Gault beat both players, and Paul Borrowdale defeated Brian. Kay managed to beat Paul, 3/1, and he and Brian won the doubles 3/0. A week later the Spinners won maximum points against the Watsonians. A good performance here from Mike Watson, who came close to winning a couple of sets against Kay, after which he and Doug Campbell won a set in the very competitive doubles. Meanwhile Top Bananas, with Dylan and Reuben, also earned five points against the Owd Coots, who had suffered the same fate a week before against the Chuckle Brothers. Scores were more encouraging in the latter fixture although they were unable to win a set.

The Watsonians’ other matches against Apple Crumble and the Chuckle Brothers earned them one point. Gary Watson battled hard against Apple Crumble’s Craig Wilson, pulling back from 0/2 down to win, -11, -6, 8, 3, 8. However, the Chuckle Brothers only let slip two sets, when Doug Campbell and Mike Watson both pushed Barry Kirkpatrick to a fourth set.
