League Report February

Top Bananas faced The Chuckle Brothers on the 11th February; when Maria De Silva opened with a 3/0 win against Barry Kirkpatrick, 13-11, 11-9, 11-3. Brother Reuben followed up with a 3/0 victory over Paul Dowson, and the siblings then won the doubles 3/0. Next Paul defeated Maria, 7, 8, -8, 3, for what turned out to be his side’s only point as Reuben beat Barry in the last tie.

The men were in action again four days later against Apple Crumble, who fielded Iain Macleod and Craig Wilson. Iain began well by beating Barry in a tense five-set match in which he won the last set 12-10. Thereafter The Chuckle Brothers amassed four points, though the going was pretty tough. They went 1-2 down in the doubles but clawed their way back to win it 3/2. Paul and Iain then played a see-saw tie, which Paul finally won 11-8 in the fifth set. Barry secured the fourth point with a 3/0 victory over Craig.

On the same night Gaulty Towers chalked up a 4/1 win over Netflicks. Paul Borrowdale won the opening match against Gordon Duff, 9, 9, -3, 10, and Graham Gault took a close tie from Shona Morton, 11, 7, -10, 6. After lagging behind 0-2, the men won the doubles -10, -8, 5, 3, 4, to lead 3/0. Any match between Graham and Gordon has the potential to go the distance, and so it proved this time as Gordon battled back from 0-2 down to beat Graham -10, -11, 6, 8, 7. In the last tie Paul was in top form and won the fourth point by beating Shona 3/0.

The last update of the League statistics was on the 31st January, at which point Top Bananas had completed the first half of their scheduled matches and topped the division with 31 points. Lying second were the then unbeaten Netflicks, with 25 points. The Chuckle Brothers and Apple Crumble were locked in a fifth-place tie, each with two wins from six matches and 11 points.

DTTC gets a Defibrillator

We're pleased to announce that the club now has a Defibrillator. Table tennis is a fantastic healthy activity, but this piece of kit can save a life in the rare event someone collapses and isn't breathing. Though defibrillators can be used without training, it's really useful to see how it works and to improve confidence we could use it if need be. The club has therefore arranged for a short DeFib training session in the club on March 27th at 19:00. We'd like to get a big group of club users trained up, so please attend if you can. There are sign-up sheets at the club, or email info@dumfriesttc.co.uk as we need to know numbers well in advance.

League Report January

In mid-January Netflicks inflicted a defeat on Top Bananas, represented by Reuben and Maria De Silva. Reuben lived up to expectation with two singles wins, though Gordon Duff won a set from him. Shona Morton and Gordon edged the first set of the doubles 11-9 and swung into a “well-oiled machine” mode to win the second and third sets easily. In her first tie Maria took a set from Gordon, then fought out a much closer four-set match with Shona, who narrowly won the final set 12-10.

Burns Night found Netflicks and KB Spinners locked in combat. Kay Solaja opened with a 3/1 victory over Shona, whilst Brian Kirkpatrick lost a gruelling five-set tie to Gordon. Shona and Gordon won the doubles, -5,6, 9, 10, to pull 2/1 up, and Gordon made it 3/1 with a 3/0 win against Kay. In the final tie Brian edged Shona out of all three sets, 9, 9, 11, for an extra point.

KB Spinners had had mixed fortunes in their previous matches. In early January they lost 2/3 to Gaulty Towers, when Graham Gault beat both players, and Paul Borrowdale defeated Brian. Kay managed to beat Paul, 3/1, and he and Brian won the doubles 3/0. A week later the Spinners won maximum points against the Watsonians. A good performance here from Mike Watson, who came close to winning a couple of sets against Kay, after which he and Doug Campbell won a set in the very competitive doubles. Meanwhile Top Bananas, with Dylan and Reuben, also earned five points against the Owd Coots, who had suffered the same fate a week before against the Chuckle Brothers. Scores were more encouraging in the latter fixture although they were unable to win a set.

The Watsonians’ other matches against Apple Crumble and the Chuckle Brothers earned them one point. Gary Watson battled hard against Apple Crumble’s Craig Wilson, pulling back from 0/2 down to win, -11, -6, 8, 3, 8. However, the Chuckle Brothers only let slip two sets, when Doug Campbell and Mike Watson both pushed Barry Kirkpatrick to a fourth set.

League report

Five matches took place before Christmas. Netflicks gained another nine points, with wins over Apple Crumble and The Chuckle Brothers. Iain Macleod (AC) proved to be their Achilles heel when he defeated Shona Morton 3/2. The Chuckle Brothers came close to taking a couple of points when Paul Dowson took Gordon Duff to a fifth set and Barry Kirkpatrick lost a tight match with Shona.

KB Spinners also defeated The Chuckle Brothers. This match was interesting as it brought Brian and Barry Kirkpatrick into conflict. Dad Brian lost the first set 12-14 but brought his son into line in the next three sets. However, there are signs that the younger pair is finding its feet amongst the former Division 1 sides: not only did they win the doubles, 11-8 in the fifth from 1-2 down, but all the singles required a fourth set.

Apple Crumble’s last match of the old year gained them five points against that feisty duo, The Owd Coots. There were several very close sets, but the defeated side won only one, when Steve Cussell pushed Craig Wilson to a fourth set.

Gaulty Towers was firmly in control against the Watsonians in their last game of 2022. However, they met their match in their first fixture of 2023. The Top Bananas fielded Dylan and Reuben De Silva and coasted to a reasonably comfortable victory. Graham Gault took a set from Reuben, but that was the sum total of his team’s success.

The Watsonians were in more familiar territory in early January against their former Division 2 opponents, The Owd Coots. In a closely contested match the latter went ahead 2-0 when Steve Cussell beat Gary Watson 3/1 and Ray Pirrie defeated Mike 3/1. However, Gary and Mike struck back to win the doubles, 3/1, after which Mike earned a 3/0 victory over Steve. In the last tie Gary put up a good fight against Ray, but finally went down 1/3, giving The Owd Coots a 3/1 win.

The Top Bananas’ match with the Watsonians the next night netted them another five points; Mike Watson did well to take a set from Maria De Silva in the last tie.

Danny’s exploits and league results

British Universities Championships 21/22 Nov 2022

Danny Bajwa has been on his travels again. Along with a contingent of other Scottish students, he took part in three events at the British Universities’ Championships. The Men’s Singles was a very big event with sixty-four groups, mostly of four players each. Danny was seeded 7th and worked his way through four rounds to the quarter-final. Here he lost to top seed and eventual winner, Shayan Siraj.

Men’s Doubles: Danny and his partner, Dylan Currie, reached the semi-finals, where they lost to the eventual winners 1/3. Winning a Bronze medal apiece made them the top performers in the Scottish squad.

Mixed Doubles:  Danny and Paula Callaghan were disappointed to lose out on a chance to reach the quarter-finals when, at 1-2 down, they led 9-1 in the fourth set of their Last 16 match only to lose it 1/3. The knowledge that their opponents eventually claimed silver medals may have eased the pain somewhat.

Danny’s next outing was at the North Ayrshire Open, on the 28/29th November. He had a successful day on the Saturday, when he was runner up in the Men’s Singles and won the Open Doubles with long-term partner Martin Johnson.

Being the thoughtful person he is, Danny returned on the Sunday to help coach the young players in their events, along with Dylan De Silva and Shannon Brown, who is still on the injury list. Maria and Reuben De Silva, Cory, and Finlay all played well, gaining some good wins and fighting some tight battles.

League Results

This season there is only one division, comprised of four of last year’s Division 1 sides, three from Division 2, and one new team. In the first week of play, with the first three matches pitting ex-Division 1 teams against former Division 2 teams, the results were somewhat one-sided.

Netflicks (Gordon Duff/Shona Morton) and KB Spinners (Brian Kirkpatrick/Kay Solaja) respectively beat The Watsonians (Gary and Mike Watson) and the Owd Coots (Steve Cussell/Raymond Pirrie) without losing a set.

Apple Crumble (Iain Macleod/Craig Wilson) did somewhat better against Gaulty Towers (Graham Gault/Paul Borrowdale). Although they couldn’t quite manage to steal a tie, Iain and Craig led 2/0 in the doubles and forced their opponents to a fifth set. In the ensuing singles Iain, showing signs of his usual ability to faze the higher-ranked players, won a set from Graham. Rumour has it that new member Paul is a force to be reckoned with.

Last Saturday morning the Top Bananas (Maria & Reuben De Silva) took on new entrants, the Chuckle Brothers (Barry Kirkpatrick/Paul Dowson). Paul, who has not played for some years, earned the best results for his side, making Maria battle for their second set, which she finally won 16-14. However, the in-form siblings went on to make a clean sweep.

The Top Bananas stayed on to play the KB Spinners in the afternoon, a match which was scheduled for December 17th.  More on this match next week.

Over 50s Session

The Over-50s Thursday morning session continues to thrive. In fact in one recent week there were more players than spaces on the twelve tables. However, this situation was swiftly resolved when refreshments were ready, after which everyone was able to find a playing slot. Any over-50s who are passing the Club in Shakespeare Street between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on a Thursday are welcome to pop in to see what the session has to offer.
